The opening panel and in particular the keynote speeches will address the following questions:

What is the main characteristic of development research? What should be the main characteristic of development research?

• What is the main subject of development research?
• What is the goal of development research?

Which dynamics can be expected in development research?

• What are the main new challenges development research has to face?
• Which issues will gain particular importance in development research during the next ten years?
• Are there any important issues not addressed? Blind spots?
