Birgit Englert studied African Studies at the Department of African Studies at the University of Vienna and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London.
Her Master thesis focused on the history of land politics in Zimbabwe (2000) while her doctoral dissertation was an empirical study on land tenure security in the Uluguru Mountains, Tanzania (2005).
Since autumn 2001 she is a researcher and lecturer at the Department of African Studies, University of Vienna.
In this position Birgit is editor-in-charge and co-managing editor of the Africanist Journal Stichproben. Wiener Zeitschrift für kritische Afrikastudien/Vienna Journal of African Studies.
From 03/2009 to 05/10 she was a post-doctoral researcher at the l’Université Michel de Montaigne (Bordeaux III) (financed by a Erwin-Schrödinger Grant from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, FWF).
In June and July 2010 she was based at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, as Erasmus Mundus Global Studies guest lecturer.
Currently she is Assistant Professor at the Department of African Studies at the University of Vienna
