Images of Development and Global Inequalities

Photo Forum during the Conference of the Department of Development Studies “Rethinking Global Inequality: Development (Studies) in Discourse, Critique and Practice”

The word rarely reveals itself in all its facets. What we know are usually snapshots that arise as special moments within us before we are able to communicate and cherish them. Within the framework of the conference “Rethinking Global Inequality: Development (Studies) in Discourse, Critique and Practice”, which the Department of Development Studies is organizing on October 28 and 29, a separate event should serve to accentuate our view towards “development” (as a process) and “global inequalities” (as a condition). The goal of this event is to capture the complex and diverse contexts and entanglements of development and global inequities – not just in the so-called global South, but also in Austria. The point of departure for the photo forum “Images of Development and Global Inequalities” is the perception that not only an international comparison is needed in order to rethink global inequalities, but also a change of perspective. Here, boundaries and differences are not viewed as given. Rather, it is about grasping how boundaries are produced and reproduced, and, how porous they are at times. All students, teachers, friends of “Development Studies” and other interested parties were invited, to submit their spontaneous (e.g. travel photos) and artistic-creative narratives (image processing, graphics, etc.) of “development” and “global inequalities” for the photo forum “Images of Development and Global Inequalities”. A selection of the submitted contributions will be presented on October 29 during the closing panel of the conference and discussed collectively.
